TRIBES OF FASHION ARTISTS

Updated: Jul 31, 2022

Up until recently, I started referring to myself as being a professional "fashion artist" instead of being a fashion illustrator. My reason for deciding this is quite simple, firstly, my artwork is more than art than illustration; secondly, it's so passe these days to refer to oneself as being a fashion illustrator when the world of fashion illustration is constantly changing. The title evokes and conjures up images of 1940s-style sketches with long, tall legs, or the force-fed misconception that I had to accept as a student, that there was an accepted stereotype that had to be elongated at nine-head length norm.

I kicked down these barriers that caged me in and decided to do what I wanted to do. I wanted to find my own voice and use it to communicate to the rest of the world.

To be a fashion artist means having very high observational skills and being in tune with today's fast-paced lifestyle. My artwork shakes off the mothballs of old convention to depict a function and innovation that revolutionizes fashion art.

I'm concerned with mood, emotion, and above all else, style.

Some fashion artists prefer to call themselves "reportage image-makers".

Although technology makes it easier, you still have to know how to use your hand. The computer is only a tool like a pen or brush. If you do it with computer software- fantastic! If you can do it with a pen and paper- awesome!

Every tool has its limits, but it's the artists own creativity and imagination that is limitless!
